System Requirements

Traction® TeamPage™ and Traction® TeamPage™ Feed Reader products are 100% pure Java™ standalone server applications that run on Windows, Linux, Solaris, or Mac OS X computers, as well as other machines for which a compatible Java VM is available (see below). There are no pre-requisites other than a supported operating system. After running the installer, Traction is easily set up and managed using its own web browser based administrative interface.

The software is packaged with a standalone interactive installer that can be downloaded from Traction's web site, and includes both the Traction software and a run-time edition of a compatible Java Virtual Machine for common architectures.

The Traction TeamPage Solr Search Module is installed separately from Traction TeamPage Server, has its own operating system requirements, and is generally installed on separate and dedicated server hardware. See Solr Search Module Hardware and Operating System Requirements, below.

Recommended Server Hardware - Free Traction® TeamPage™ and Traction® TeamPage Workgroup™ Configuration

Processor: Intel, AMD, Sun SPARC CPU 2Ghz (2 core minimum).
Disk space: 10GB free disk space (minimum). Recommended disk space, see below.
RAM: 2GB (minimum). 4GB or more recommended

Recommended Server Hardware - Traction® TeamPage™ Server Configuration

Processor: Multiprocessor / multi-core 64-bit Intel, AMD, or Sun SPARC computer 2Ghz (2-core minimum, 8-core minimum for heavily loaded systems)
Disk space: 10GB free disk space (minimum). Recommended disk space, see below.
RAM: 4GB (minimum) 8GB or more is strongly recommended and may be required for TeamPage Unlimited and large LDAP or Microsoft Active Directory configurations.

Traction® TeamPage™ products can be run on shared server hardware, but like all web server software, its responsiveness will be determined by the number of simultaneous users. Recommended configurations work well for workgroups of 500 or more users, depending on their usage pattern. TeamPage products make good use of multi-core and multi-processor configurations to provide responsive performance under highly variable load.

If Traction is run on shared server hardware, at least the recommended free RAM and sufficient processor resources should be available. We don't recommend hosting Traction on a server which is also hosting another CPU intensive database or web server application. Please contact TSI for specific guidance on use of shared or virtual machine Traction TeamPage configurations.

For optimal performance, we recommend installing TeamPage, its journal data, and the system's swap partition (or other virtual memory files) on an SSD (Solid State Drive).

Estimating recommended disk space

Disk space minimum requirements are for Traction TeamPage software, online help, and a small TeamPage database (about 1000 pages / posts + image attachments). The operational minimum space for a Traction TeamPage deployment is roughly:

The minimum Traction TeamPage requirement, plus

Total number of pages / posts times average size of a page or post (typically 1KB to 10KB of text), plus

Space for all files posted as attachments or stored in Traction TeamPage web folders. File sizes typically range from 25KB to several MB range for office documents, pictures, .pdfs - and much more for video / audio files. In many cases, storage space for attachments is greater than that all for other storage requirements - depending on the customer use case.

We recommend at having at least 2x the estimated operational minimum disk space free to allow for efficient backup, operation, and maintenance of the Traction TeamPage installation.

Traction TeamPage Server Operating System

For all Traction TeamPage configurations, the server operating system must be capable of running the Java Virtual Machine configuration provided with the TeamPage installer or qualified for use by Traction Software. 64-bit computer hardware and operating systems are recommended for all Traction TeamPage configurations, although 32-bit computer hardware and operating systems may suffice for small TeamPage 5-user and TeamPage Workgroup deployments. Please contact TSI for configuration advice on Traction TeamPage Server configurations with unlimited Named Accounts.

  • Microsoft Windows 7, 2008 Server, 2003 Server, XP, 2000, NT 4.0 (SP 5 or greater); 64-bit recommended for TeamPage Server
  • Linux (x86 or x86_64) - Current Red Hat or equivalent distribution; 64-bit recommended for TeamPage Server
  • Solaris (x86, AMD64, or SPARC) - Current Solaris; 64-bit recommended for TeamPage Server
  • MacOS X - Release 10.5 or later; 64-bit recommended for TeamPage Server

Solr Search Module Hardware and Operating System

The Traction TeamPage Apache Solr Search Module consists of a Solr server and a TeamPage Solr Connector Plug-In that installs Solr interface software and a Solr Setup control panel on your TeamPage server. The Solr server can be configured to use combined or separate indexer and query engines to handle very large data sets (stored on a Traction TeamPage server) and high volume use. Solr runs best on its own dedicated 64-bit computer and operating system. The Solr Search Module comes with its own installer. Please below for general guidance. Please contact TSI for Solr configuration guidance and recommendations based on your use of TeamPage and a rough estimate of the amount of data that Solr will be expected to index.

  • Solr runs on Windows, Linux, MacOS and any other Unix platform that supports Java 8
  • The disk space and RAM required by Solr are proportional to the number of entries, attachments, and shared files in your TeamPage Journal
  • We recommend you provision the same amount of disk space for Solr the you provisioned for your TeamPage journal (including its file attachments and document folders)
  • We recommend SSD or high speed disk storage
  • Quad-core CPU (minimum)
  • RAM 4GB (minimum for small TeamPage journal). A typical journal of 250,000 records should start with 16GB RAM, increasing to 32GB for 500,000 records. If search or indexing performance is sluggish, adding additional RAM generally improves the situation.
  • See the Solr Search space on Traction Software's Support server for documentation on how to install, configure, and use Solr search with TeamPage.

Web Browser

For optimal results, we recommend using the current, stable production release for any of the following Web browsers:

  • Firefox (all platforms) - Version 3.6 or newer
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Windows) - Version 8 or newer
  • Safari (Mac OS X, Windows, Apple iOS) - Version 4.x or newer
  • Google Chrome

These browsers can also be used with some Traction skins, with limitations and exceptions:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Windows) - Version 6
  • Mozilla (all platforms) - Version 1 or greater
  • Firefox (all platforms) - Version 3.x
  • Safari (Mac OS X, Windows) - Version 3.x
  • Opera

Mobile devices and almost all web browsers can be used with specific Traction skins, such as the Simple skin, including:

  • Blackberry browser
  • Lynx
  • Opera mobile version for Series 60 Symbian

Optional Client Software

  • The Traction Instant Publisher (TIP) windows client requires Windows NT, 2000, ME, 2003 Server, XP, Vista, 2008 Server, or 7.
  • The TIP includes a plug-in for publishing from NewsGator, an RSS news reader plug-in for Microsoft Outlook.
  • Traction TeamPage supports most client software that uses RSS for reading and XML-RPC for publishing, including blog editors which support the MetaWeblog publishing, tagging and editing API.

Optional Client Requirements for Full WebDAV Support under Microsoft Windows

Note: Windows Vista and Windows 7 only support authenticated WebDAV access over an HTTPS connection with a trusted or properly signed certificate.

  • Windows Web Folders: Web folders can be used with WebDAV to access project share folders and folders attached to articles via Windows Explorer. Read more about this function in WebDAV Project Share Folders.
  • Edit Documents Over the Web: An Edit button can appear next to Microsoft Office documents which are in Project Share Folders or posted as Article or Comment attachments. This allows the user to launch the document in its native application, edit it and save it back to the Traction server over the web.
  • South River Technologies' WebDrive WebDAV client provides robust Windows support for the WebDAV protocol, and supports offline syncing of WebDAV folder contents.

Network Configuration

Traction's web form interface allows an authorized person to configure the port(s) used to provide http and use email services, create projects and user accounts, and specify the permissions that users have in different projects.

Traction supports HTTPS secure communication, including support for optional or required X.509 client certificates.
